Gangotri Dham remains open from Apr-May to Oct-Nov only and huge rush of pilgrims can be seen between these months. May, June, Sept & October are some best months to visit Gangotri. Pilgrims should avoid visiting Gangotri during monsoon season.
Gangotri is located in high altitude near the frozen glacier, Gangotri glacier. In the summer months from May to October, the weather remains pleasant. In between these months, monsoon receives mid to heavy rainfall. Gangotri also receives heavy snowfall in winters.
Registration for must to visit Gangotri or any of the Chardhams in Uttarakhand. It become compulsory to every pilgrim to get registered either online or at the counters situated at various locations. Registration can be done free of cost. Registration counters are available at Haridwar, Rishikesh, Uttarkashi and Gangotri. Gangotri Dham remains open for only 6 months, so there are temporary hotels and restaurants serving food during the yatra season. These dhabas or restaurant serves basic vegetarian food such as Parantha, Dal, Roti, Sabji, Chawal, Maggi etc.
Yes, Gangotri is well connected by road and pilgrims can drive to Gangotri on car or bike. Only care should be taken during monsoon as there may be landslides blocking road to Gangotri.
Gangotri Dham can be easily visited from Haridwar or Delhi. There are regular yatra buses available from Haridwar to Gangotri or one can take local/roadways bus service to Uttarkashi and further travel by taxi. Gangotri is situated at 290 kms from Haridwar and 508 kms from Delhi. Haridwar is the nearest rail head to reach Gangotri. Domestic airpost at Jolly Grant Dehradun has connecting flights to Delhi at every hour. It is 270 kms from Gangotri. From Haridwar, one can board bus to Gangotri or hire a car.
